Basel Basel – the third-largest city in Switzerland is located in the Rhine River Valley at the point where the French, German and Swiss borders meet. On the borders are the French Vosges Mountains, the German Black Forest, and the Swiss Jura mountain range. The Rhine divides the city into two parts. The Grossbasel or Greater Basel lies on the left bank of the Rhine and the Kleinbasel or Lesser Basel on the right bank. The two parts of the city are connected by six bridges. The Old Imperial City is located in Greater Basel. The city is a major banking and industrial center. Basel is one of the largest cities in Switzerland, a center of culture and education. The city is home to many museums, theaters, concerts, and festivals. There are several educational institutions in Basel, where several thousand students study. Basel is also the most famous marketplace for antique dealers and jewelers. Several world-famous events in these industries are held here every year. Every year, Basel hosts one of the world’s largest carnivals – the Fasnacht Carnival. The Cathedral The Cathedral of Basel, as they say, is a “symbol of the city”. This is one of those attractions, without which no tourist route in this ancient city is unthinkable. The magnificent building, solid and high, combining features of both Gothic and Romanesque styles, was built in the 12th century. True, it was badly damaged in the earthquake of 1356, but it was completely rebuilt. Trellis Gate The Spalentor Gate attracts everyone who visits Basel and makes you wonder how beautiful an architectural structure built in the distant 14th century can be simple in its purpose. Previously, the gate was part of the defensive line of the city, as evidenced by the two towers, closely adjacent to the central arch of the gate and mesmerizing admiring tourists with its harsh beauty. Paper Museum The Paper Museum is located in a delightfully restored medieval mill in Saint-Albin-Thal. The museum’s exposition tells about the origin and development of paper production and book printing in Switzerland. Right in the presence of visitors, the processes of ancient book printing technology are demonstrated. And especially interested visitors can even try to test this technique in practice and try themselves in the role of the first printer. Jean Tengeli Museum The Museum of Jean Tengeli belongs to the “non-classical” museums according to the presented exposition. This is a collection of works by Jean Tengeli, an avant-garde sculptor. They may be difficult to understand, but they make a strong impression at first glance. In the museum, you can find not only sculptures but also drawings of the artist, documents, advertising posters of his exhibitions, catalogs, and photographs. The museum constantly hosts exhibitions of contemporary artists and sculptors. Fasnachtbrunnen Fountain The Fasnachtbrunnen fountain owes its appearance to a fellow Baselander, Jean Tengeli, as well as to the burned-out theater, which was located exactly on the very place where the fountain now stands. Tengeli took the remnants of the theater scenery left after the fire and breathed new life into them, making them part of the sculptural composition of the fountain. And the water supplied under high pressure creates a bizarre extravaganza of rainbow jets. The sights of Basel are probably the easiest and most enjoyable to explore on foot. A high concentration of attractions are located around the Market Square (Marktplatz) and the Cathedral, built in the Romano-Gothic style. The mountainous surroundings of the city offer some great views and walks.
